School Supplies

Every year we ask parents to nominate a School we can bless with "extras" for the kids that can not have all supplies ready when School starts.  Each year we want to contribute and refine the process. We had several nominees and several very good suggestions.

A single mom, who is also a school secretary, suggested that the School gives a plug at any of the parent days to drop donations into a box located at the office to keep it local or to go to a Office Max or your local grocery store that facilitates wholesale supplies to nominated Schools. That would certainly spread it around a little.

We also suggest to donate Book Fair coupons (money) for kids that would love to have a book of their own.
Mentoring for reading and math has been successful. We need longer commitments from mentors.

statute of limitations?

The statue of limitations for blaming your parents (usually your mom who was in survival mode for years putting food on the table) for all the bad choices you made as an adult ran out when you turned 35-40. Own your part of the deal, move on, quit the tantrum and scapegoating, and graciously mentor a kid that can benefit from your experience. Thank the teacher for character building and you, for having a testimony of God's grace.

Farmers Market Bonanza

Just a reminder that many of the local Farmers Markets discount their fresh veggies prior to closing down for usually $5-10 for anything that you can fit in a bag. We estimate that you can bag enough for 3-4 people for a 1-2+ wk period.

Tip of the week

On occasion we get some tasty, healthy, inexpensive recipes. During Summer vacation we are getting tips galore:

What's the major advantage of using the whole lemon other than preventing waste and adding new taste to your dishes?

Well, you see lemon peels contain as much as 5 to 10 times more vitamins than the lemon juice itself. And yes, that's what you've been wasting. But from now on, by following this simple procedure of freezing the whole lemon, then grating it on top of your dishes, you can consume all of those nutrients and get even healthier. It's also good that lemon peels are health rejuvenators in eradicating toxic elements in the body.

So place your lemon in your freezer, and then grate it on your meal every day. It is a key to make your foods tastier and you get to live healthier and longer! That's the lemon secret!

(From a friend who just came back from Morocco where they add the pulp of cooked lemon to many dishes and dice the (cooked) peel to spice up sauces. Cooked lemon slices can be kept in the fridge for up to 6 months.)

Help for Parents, Hope for Children

TEXAS leads the way into the right direction. We offer help without judgement.

When parents hurt, kids get hurt. But, when parents get help, there's hope for kids.
Using a federal grant, DFPS will spend $2,400,000 on the campaign. This includes a summer-long advertising and social media blitz that will reach millions of Texas parents and encourage them to visit http://www.helpandhope.org/ or the Spanish website, http://www.ayudayesperanza.org/ Advertising is in both English and Spanish and includes TV, radio, online, billboards, transit, movie theatres, and retail stores. The social media campaign features daily posts and tweets on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. TV ads and parent testimonials are on YouTube and the websites, and there's even a contest on Facebook to encourage people to spread the message and learn more.

At HelpandHope.org, parents will find Real Stories of Hope - powerful video testimonials of parents who are facing their demons, getting help to break the cycle or abuse, and working to build stronger, healthier families.

Spanking causes mental illness

Although the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly discourages spanking, at least half of parents admit to physically punishing their children. Some research suggests that as many as 70-90 percent of mothers have resorted to spanking at one time or another.

5119 users liked this Report Abuse In a related study, children who were given no consequences at all for bad behaviors turned out to be psychopaths, sociopaths, and politicians.

2523 users liked this Report Abuse I got spanked quite a few times as a kid, and I deserved every one I ever got.

558 users liked this "...as much as 7 percent of adult mental illness may be attributable to childhood physical punishment, including slapping, shoving, grabbing, and hitting...."
That means that 93 percent does not... just sayin

Some suggested that time out is more humane than sending criminals to prison.

My experience is that some strong willed kids need more intervention than calmer personalities. Age of parent/child, economics, support, play a role as well. Times have changed. Bullying, entitlement, and disrespect are epidemic. We are also more educated and have more resources now than 10-20 years ago.

I come across very educated people, financially secure, who do not believe in "spanking", they would never be caught beating their kids, however, their kids are on a short leash and the stepson is held at the collar. Abuse, anyway you spin it is wrong.

We can help.
