Celebrate the birthday of one of America’s greatest legends, William “Buffalo Bill” Cody. In the grand tradition of parties, the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave will host the annual Buffalo Bill Birthday Celebration , from noon to 3 p.m Feb.26th. Sing Happy Birthday, eat cake, play games and maybe even learn a thing or two on this very festive FREE day.

Join the Museum staff at Noon for a ceremonial cutting of the cake by a photogenic collection of Buffalo Bill look-a-likes. Then wander through the Museum exhibits, visiting with costumed volunteers as they discuss the Native Americans, buffalo and cowboys that were such a vital part of Buffalo Bill’s life. At 1:30 p.m. the action moves back outside for the annual Buffalo-Chip Tossing Contest. Prizes will be awarded in both an adult and child’s category.

well, we can dream and we can justify for about two minutes.... time's up. We are reducing credit card debt.

Paying off a credit card completely seems as if it should do wonders for your credit, but it could be better for your credit score to leave a small balance on the card. When a small amount is owed, the remaining credit on your card is factored into your credit utilization ratios, whereas cards with no balance don't count. So oddly, your credit score can actually drop when you bring a card balance down to zero.

If you've scrimped and struggled to pay off a card, your initial reaction may be to cut up the plastic and close the account. Resist the urge. Various factors are taken into account when calculating your creditworthiness, and 15% of your score is determined by the length of your credit history. By closing an account, especially an older one, you shorten your credit history. The more established accounts you have, the higher your credit score.
Credit card companies also look at how much of your available credit you are using, which is referred to as your credit utilization rate. They like to see 35% or less of your credit in use at any one time. Paying off a credit card and leaving it open improves your utilization score, but closing it could do just the opposite.

I love that word. It used to drive people crazy when I wanted to “summarize” after a meeting to be sure everyone heard what was said and we all were on the same page.

Let's summarize...

I could bullet a top ten list, but everything always comes down to time and money. This site was created for a quick, practical reference guide for moms who had to use the library computer or come home to their second job and did not have time to reinvent the wheel to meet their situation or the money to bridge a gap.

Growing pains for us is a joyful experience because it indicates that we are connecting with more single mom families.

We evolved in some areas like the School Supply Drive that started with loaded Back Packs for a few moms to boxes of School Supplies donated to Food Banks, to donors giving directly to Schools.

Many of our resources here on CALL MOM are now common knowledge (like Farmers Market, Coat Drive, Thanksgiving/Christmas boxes etc.) are passed on verbally to the sisterhood, while “boutique” blogs and vital information are up 24/7/365. You are still welcome to shoot us an email or call when you need to be talked off a ledge. We are here for you. We hear you.

This freed us up for expansion in other areas like helping charitable individuals to start food banks, thrift stores, swap meets, and mentoring in any given area in the US to interconnect with the general public of single moms. We have a big vision. We have a lavish God.

We had a proud moment when we were nominated and received the honor of being included in Stanford's who's who for 2011/2012.

I want to close with a KISS (Keep it simple Sister)no big survey, just the standard question on how we can better serve you and you sharing information that can raise the quality for all single mom families. Military Moms, you are not forgotten.

The Delores Project (Women Shelter) is named for Delores Big Boy, a Lakota woman who frequently lived on the streets of Denver. Her situation was complicated by health, developmental and substance abuse issues, as well as physical and sexual violence.

I have also seen the top ten list of toys for little girls and boys and count my blessings that I do not have to deal with 7 out of 10 OMG items. You still can opt out of "angry, destructive bird" with a talking globe or a oolgly googly. A programmable robotic rover could be quite brainey or a perplexus rookie game. Keyboards stimulate creativity and are always popular. Crystal growing and stone collecting sets, science, arts and crafts, books!!!!. metal detectors, legos, walkie talkies.... my favorite? a nestview birdhouse.

Love and boundaries are still more compatible than love and permissiveness. Don't buy into the guilt trip of "all the other kids" however, DO give them options.

Where is the beef?

Over Thanksgiving some of us discussed food prices, nutrition and coupons.

One mom makes stock with chicken bones
(after the chicken/turkey is de-boned and cut up into meal size packages and frozen)
The bones are cooked in a stock pot with all of the onion peels and scraps, carrot scraps, celery scraps.
Broth is then frozen in ice cube trays to add as needed to dishes.
For quick consumption she adds a handful of noodles/rice, the remaining meat off the cooked bones and (be creative) some mushrooms? leeks? and voila you have a healthy meal.

Saute Cabbage with Tomato Paste, onions, garlic and Sardines, lots of black pepper and for me lots of cayenne pepper, and this is great over hot toasted bread or dumplings (which I make the dumplings homemade too with only flour, water and a little baking powder, then fry)...either way the sardines with cabbage dish is very tasty, healthy and economical

Televison/Internet alternative

We'd like to think that we have superpowers by working faster and smarter in lieu of the non-support. Let's face it, we are human, and fall short. We all used the TV for a "sitter" so that we could catch up on stuff that needed to be done or just process. We know that TV is a drug that keeps you stupid. 20 years from now some of the peeps will still accuse you of neglect for having been a single mom, for having done things that were immature, survival, lack of coping skills, needing space, being a woman, and not the mom and dad they "deserved", for picking a sitter we could afford instead of a Montessori School, etc.
We love to share and offer options. Throw out the TV and allow the kiddos to watch wimp.com documentaries instead. Some are fascinating, entertaining, informational, educational....
Spare yourself the entitlement guilt trip and teach them responsibility for their choices - but DO offer choices. Boundaries are not a lack of love but a safety net (of love) from a free fall to destruction of relationships.

My kids had a friend over who participated in a family activity, called reading. I could not believe what I heard him read. First we laughed at the words he mutilated until I realized how serious his handicap was. After reading the statistics on illiteracy I want to inspire all who read this blog.

Collect any worthwhile, educational, entertaining books and donate them to your local school/congregation/prison*. They can pass them on to kids.

Why learn to read early?

Two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of the 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. The fourth grade is the watershed year.

•85 percent of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate.
•More than 60 percent of all prison inmates are functionally illiterate.
•Penal institution records show that inmates have a 16% chance of returning to prison if they receive literacy help, as opposed to 70% who receive no help. This equates to taxpayer costs of $25,000 per year per inmate and nearly double that amount for juvenile offenders.

•Illiteracy and crime are closely related. The Department of Justice states, "The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure." Over 70% of inmates in America's prisons cannot read above a fourth grade level.

Many of the USA ills are directly related to illiteracy. Just a few statistics:
•Literacy is learned. Illiteracy is passed along by parents who cannot read or write.
•One child in four grows up not knowing how to read.
•43% of adults at Level 1 literacy skills live in poverty compared to only 4% of those at Level 5
•3 out of 4 food stamp recipients perform in the lowest 2 literacy levels
•90% of welfare recipients are high school dropouts
•16 to 19 year old girls at the poverty level and below, with below average skills, are 6 times more likely to have out-of-wedlock children than their reading counterparts.
•Low literary costs $73 million per year in terms of direct health care costs. A recent study by Pfizer put the cost much higher.

*If you donate to Goodwill etc. Juvenile prisoners can not get the books. Moms can not afford to purchase from Goodwill....

Veterans saluted in Fort Collins

On Sunday the city of Fort Collins will celebrate the unveiling of a new public plaza that will salute the nation's military veterans.
Opening events this Sunday at the Veterans Plaza of Northern Colorado, set on three acres at the entrance of Spring Canyon Community Park, 2626 W. Horsetooth Road, kicks off at 10 a.m. The day's events will also include a flag-raising ceremony, music, food, military re-enactments, displays of restored vintage military vehicles and a flyover by F-16 fighter jets, according to a media release from Maj. Diggs Brown, of the Colorado Army National Guard
The second phase of development for the Veterans Plaza will be celebrated with the unveiling of a bronze statue conveying the story of generations of sacrifice. Join supporters of the Plaza by attending the unveiling of the statue and public ceremony at 1:00 p.m. on Nov. 13. Other planned events include live music, raising of the flags on the plaza, an F-16 flyover and a keynote speech by Maj. Gen. H. Michael Edwards, the Adjutant General of Colorado.

The greatest thing any parent or teacher can give a child is the support to solve their own problems. The goal is not to force a kid who struggles to work harder at being like everyone else. The goal is help a kid who struggles to find a workaround for the specific thing that’s holding them back. The skills our children learn to overcome adversity when they are young will become their talents when they are older. And it is these talents that will invent and build the products and companies that will help and inspire the rest of us when they’re older.

If only there were a way to take the fear and anxiety out of the never ending laundry pile! How do children do it?? There are only 7 days in the week, 24 hours in a day, 1440 minutes in a day and yet the laundry basket looks like the fountain of never ending socks, shirts and pants that continue to overflow into the hallway! OR the laundry basket in the only empty area of the entire house because the clothes are hiding in every corner of the house creating their own scavenger hunt in order to be placed in the washing machine!

Try this simple battle of the bulging laundry basket…. Take two laundry baskets, one is a dark color and the other is white. If you don’t have two “official” baskets, use two boxes or any type of container that will control the roaming clothes! Label one of them DARK and the other WHITES. Bring your children on this great adventure of conquering the stress of laundry day. They can be a great help and it will teach them responsibility. The rest is simple! The instructions are as follows: When you undress put your dark clothes in the DARK basket and put your light colored clothes in the WHITE basket. This gives even the smallest member of the clothed family a chance strategically through their clothes in the appropriate basket. Just think about it… those socks now have a chance to experience washing, drying and folding TOGETHER!! They will not fear being lost in the closet, alone in the washer or dropped from the dryer. They will stay together for many wearings and even experience their first hole in the toe together!

To complete this cycle, just wash the basket that is full first. The sorting of colors is already done, just dump the whole load in the washer, then dryer, then invite the family to help fold! Yes even the little ones can help fold washed clothes, socks, and shorts. They want to be involved and they are quite good with those small motor skills!

Giving them an opportunity to have ownership in helping from the beginning to the end will also give them the responsibility to fill the baskets each and every time!

•Over 4 million women are victims of severe assaults by their boyfriends/husbands.

•1 in 4 women are abused in their lifetime in the U.S. Worldwide it is 1 in 3 women.

•Female victims of domestic violence are 3 times more than male victims.

Once again this Christmas season, James Resource Network is blessed to partner with another agency in the area to be able to provide Christmas gifts for many children of single parent families in need, whom we seek to serve in the Denver Metro area!

The application process is easy, but must be done in a timely manner prior to October 28th. Applications can be mailed or dropped at the following location: James Resource Network/SheShe’s Corner, 7562 S University Blvd, M1, Centennial, CO 80122. It is extremely important that each application is signed by the applicant and it cannot be altered in any way. We cannot accept any applications without a signature.

Delivery of the gifts will be on Friday and Saturday, December 16th-17th.. Someone 18 years or older must be home in order for us to deliver the gifts. Therefore, it is very important that all the contact information requested be supplied in full, including a good primary contact phone number and if possible an alternate contact phone as well. We cannot leave items with neighbors, or on the front or back porch.

We will do our very best to provide the gifts that are requested. However, we are unable to provide the following items: Xbox, Game Boy, Game Cube, Play Station, MP3 Players, IPods, IPhones, Cell Phones, TV’s, Computers and Wii Game Stations.

In addition to the gifts, each family will receive a holiday food basket. Because we have a limited number of gifts for children, we will honor the applications on a first come, first serve basis. What is up with Dentists? During the past several months we had a few dental emergencies that had to wait for up to 4 days because the family dentist had no backup lined up and could not be bothered while his colleges refused to step in because it was not their patient. We suggested that the answering service could give some useful hints on how to bridge the gap. "we are very sorry but that too is against protocol".

We are not Dentists, however this is what we found on the Internet for a common problem.

Lost crown

If the crown falls off, make an appointment to see your dentist as soon as possible and bring the crown with you. If you can't get to the dentist right away and the tooth is causing pain, use a cotton swab to apply a little clove oil to the sensitive area (clove oil can be purchased at your local drug store or in the spice aisle of your grocery store). If possible, slip the crown back over the tooth. Before doing so, coat the inner surface with an over-the-counter dental cement, toothpaste, or denture adhesive, to help hold the crown in place. Do not use super glue!

Just a few months back I took a bee-keeping class. While not afraid of bees and having been stung before I thought about the other ways I had been stung by people. When it came down to survival, I was no different than a bee. The buzzzzzzzing warning signs, and sometimes the sting. (with a wish that they'd be really allergic and wise up)

Next time somebody hurts you, or you hurt somebody, consider that underneath that experience is a fearful person. Somebody just like you who is trying to avoid being "stung" worse than they were before.

I live in Cedar Creek TX, just outside of Bastrop, where on Sept 4, 2011, the fires started and as of 9/11/11 burned 34,000 acres and destroyed about 1400 homes. My family and I were evacuated for 3 days for the second fire - the Cedar Creek/ Union Chapel fire. I went to help out at our church, Ascenion Catholic Church, in Bastrop and worked from Monday evening to Thursday evening. I would like to share a little of what occurred there.
I will be politically incorrect and tell everyone PLEASE do NOT donate ANYTHING to the Red Cross. They do not do what they say they will do. They brought blankets, etc to our shelter and then gave the church a bill for the goods. We told them to take it back and we purchased everything ourselves for the people. Then 4 days later, they show up at our church again, only to shoot a PR video of how much they are helping the shelters, when they had never been there except to shoot the video. We asked one of their representatives to help a man with his medications and he said,"We don't do that". But they have ads on TV saying they will help with medications. My friend backed him into a corner and basically asked, "So what DO you do?" He said they could give out some vouchers and/or gift cards to Wal-Mart "so people can buy shoes that fit, but only if they NEED that. We don't tell everyone about that." Duh, why wouldn't they need that, since their homes and possessions were lost in a fire? Why should we/they have to beg like dogs to get that benefit? We have talked to many other people who have worked with Red Cross in the past and they all say the same things: they will "help" you but then they give you a bill. I even talked to a retired Air Force major who knows of international stories like this and more. Sorry if I offend anyone, but I'm only sharing what we experienced first-hand.
At this time, there is no need for clothes or toiletries, but mainly monetary donations. They can be given to Ascension Catholic Church or the Bastrop Ministerial Alliance, sorry, I don't have that website handy. Please give to any other organization you wish, just not Red Cross. I've heard Salvation Army was a good organization, but I haven't seen them in Bastrop.

Mark your calendars, Emily Griffith is rocking and rolling on the city blocks of Welton and 12th with a block party for Denver on Thursday, October 6 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. (take off -it's worth it!)
The event is free and open to the public.
The 2nd annual event, dubbed "OPPORTUNITY ROCKS THE BLOCK" will feature education opportunities, interactive career demonstrations and food, live entertainment and activities for kids.

Live entertainment will be headlined by world-renowned recording artist Manuel Molina, who has performed for the US Department of Defense and US embassies overseas. Molina features Latin and world music with his three piece band. More artists will be announced closer to the event.
The event will kick off with a "Parade of Nations" at 10 a.m. where refugee and English as a Second Language students from the Language Learning Center parade the flag of their nation with pride.
A limited number of goodie bags with coupons and free items will be presented to the event's first guests. Food from the Emily Griffith Culinary Kitchen and area restaurants will offer a variety of tastes for every palate. Free haircuts and food samples from the cosmetology and culinary arts departments, respectively, will be offered, and a fashion show by the fashion design program will highlight student creations.

Emily Griffith High School is co-hosting the event and will host street art, basketball contests and other games.

Over 40 different career programs, most of which can be completed in less than a year, will be on display from accounting to medical and dental to welding and auto mechanics. Assistance with financial aid and admissions will also be available.
Emily Griffith Technical College is one of Colorado's longest-standing educational resources, having opened its doors "for all who wish to learn" in Denver with over 1.6 million graduates. With an annual enrollment of approximately 10,000 students, the college provides affordable education in accredited programs in over 40 certificate programs and 14 trade apprenticeships that can lead to high-paying careers or guaranteed transfer to any of the state's community colleges towards an associates of applied science degree.

It's that time of year again for schools to start up and while an exciting time for our single parent families, it can also be financially stressful since parents are expected to provide all of the children's supplies.

annual school supply drive now through August 12th.

If you are a single parent in need of help, submit your school supply lists as soon as possible. We will fill requests to the best of our ability on a first come first serve basis.

Last week we discussed ideas on how to earn extra income. Here is how one mom is pulling it off.

She loves to bake and knows she can make money selling her scones and cookies to coffee shops, real estate/management/leasing offices, insurance agencies, even high end car repair shops etc.

To save time and money she found a fully equipped commercial kitchen co-op where she can operate for $15 ten hrs per week. New clients consult there with her and regulars pick up orders. (until she has her own shop)

As a single (unsupported) mom I used to "over" everything! After I drove myself crazy I went to the other extreme. Somewhere in the middle I found my comfort zone: GUILT, and that justified everything. As you know, the most critical people are the least likely to offer a hand as part of a solution.

While out watching the fireworks on the 4th, our blankets were dusty and full of cockleburrs (?)
Someone recommended to keep a cheap shower curtain liner with a picnic blanket for these occasions. The liner keeps the blanket dry, and we no longer have to worry about wet bottoms after our picnic.

Some of the most painful situations for moms and children are the no-show dads.

I was visiting with a few moms and the children after church when one little girl said: "I wish I had a dad".

It just tore my heart out. Time, distance, and forgiveness had not significantly diminished the pain of emotional abuse of a parent who is unavailable for the over-fought custodial visitations time and time again.

Some of us are flexible with distractions. Sometimes we outright lie (Daddy had a flat tire) etc. Some of us enable the negligent parent with our apathy.

Send us your comments on how you cope and overcame. We'd like to encourage other women who become the firewall between dad and the children.

Many of the moms are breathing a sigh of relief that school is out and the kids can connect with relatives for a while to allow mom and kiddos to recharge. Some of them are not so lucky. Some moms take their vacation time, if it has not been depleted with time off for sick kids, and if a senior employee, or a manager will authorize it. The lack of finances are always an issue no matter how creative you get.

I heard a lot about VBS - every church is advertising it on a banner in their parking lot. I used to think, nothing is free, they try to convert my kids, oblige me to join their church, want me to volunteer, when it's me that needs a break.....

Actually, you don't have to be a member of the Church to enroll your kids. They provide a week long camp like environment with lots of fun and games provided by people who love kids. Ages typically range from 4 yrs to 5th grade. There are no intrusive questionnaires. VBS is free. If they do charge a nominal material fee, it can be worked out.

We allow you to give yourself a break (LOL) You, and the kids, will be glad you checked it out.

P.S. You may also check with the YMCA and discuss your financial situation. They will work with you as well.
