To all you graduates

What an emotional time to watch our peeps graduate and strut our momma pride.  How many snotty noses, how many diapers, how many band aids, how many parent-teacher conferences, sports events, hairstyles, hugs, sassing, and power struggles lined that journey to our heartfelt blessing them to make choices they won't regret some day.

We open our hands to release them and keep them open to receive them when they need to return.

As for me, I'll flip flop to the pool, clear my head, and plan my next chapter.

Memorial Day -Deeper than thank you and the flag

Pfc. Lori Piestew

Aimee Sherrod, an Air Force veteran who did three war tours, said years went by when she didn’t tell people she was a veteran. After facing sexual harassment during two tours and mortar attacks in Iraq, the 29-year-old mother of two from Bells, Tenn., was medically discharged in 2005 with post-traumatic stress disorder.

She’s haunted by nightmares and wakes up some nights thinking she’s under attack. She’s moody as a result of PTSD and can’t function enough to work or attend college. Like some other veterans, she felt she improperly received a low disability rating by the Department of Veterans Affairs that left her with a token monthly payment. She was frustrated that her paperwork mentioned she was pregnant, a factor she thought was irrelevant.

“I just gave up on it and I didn’t tell anyone about ever being in the military because I was so ashamed over everything,” Sherrod said.

Female service members have much higher rates of divorce and are more likely to be a single parent. When they do seek help at VA medical centers, they are screening positive at a higher rate for military sexual trauma, meaning they indicated experiencing sexual harassment, assault or rape. Some studies have shown that female veterans are at greater risk for homelessness.

Honor those women with respect.

Quote of the week

I am not allowed to sing, dance, laugh or wear short skirts. Having a teenage daughter is like living with the Taliban.

Hey, it's fun and for a good cause

Saturday May 26
Downtown Denver will be transformed into a massive free rock concert when 20 bands take to four stages for the third annual Denver Day of Rock. Toto, Fishbone and Toad the Wet Sprocket are headlining, along with dozens of other great acts. The performance areas will be along the 16th Street Mall, Denver's mile-long pedestrian promenade, making it easy to roam from act to act. Food and beer booths will be set up throughout downtown for the event (which benefits Concerts For Kids, a great local charity), with free music rocking the city from 2:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Happy Mothers Day! Great Job!!!

Yes ladies, let's reflect a little.
We all have fond memories we treasure in our hearts about the special love we have for our children - forever... unconditional, self sacrificing, to the depth only a mother and God can understand.
When I was thinking about inspirational mothers days in the past I had this OMG moment. On Mothers Day every mother was assured a carnation if she went to church. That's the only flower and recognition we would get all year. Then, some of the rich, progressive churches would honor mothers for specialties like, the oldest mother, the mother with the most children, the mother who traveled the longest distance, with a cute little gift basket or a gift certificate to a restaurant. Wasn't that sweet?
If Jesus were in the church, what would HE do?
He would have a  Red Lobster certificate for the mom that could not afford to take her kids for a Happy Meal once every three months
He would have 2 Jiffy lube certificates for the mom that was topping off the oil in her car for the past 2 years
He would have a math tutor certificate for a mom with a child that had learning problems
He would have a bowling and pizza party certificate for a youngster that needed to be celebrated
He would have a certificate for a kid to go to camp
He would provide a loving, role model couple to mentor a single-mom family for a year
He would have a soccer, baseball scholarship and uniforms/shoes for a child that wanted to play sports
He would give every single mother a $50.00 Home Depot/Lowe's certificate
He would have a before/after school  care certificate for a latchkey child
He would have a certificate for Driving School for a teenager

Mothers Day is about being a mother - that's what we do. Wishing for you to get a break.

Hugs!
